Garage Door Opener Runs But the Door Won't Move in Troy MI

The Sound Without the Motion

You press the button. The motor comes to life. You hear it running the way it always has, maybe a little smoother than usual, and the door doesn’t budge.

That combination confuses homeowners more than almost anything else I get called for. When a spring breaks there’s a bang. When a door goes off track it’s hanging sideways and you can see the problem from across the garage. This one gives you nothing to look at. The opener sounds healthy. The door sounds like it isn’t there.

After more than 13 years repairing garage doors throughout Troy, Michigan, I can tell you the good news up front: in most cases the door itself is fine and the opener is usually repairable. The bad news is that people often keep pressing the button for a week before calling, and that week matters.

The motor running while nothing moves means the connection between the motor and the door has been broken somewhere. There are only a few places that can happen, and each one has a signature.

Start With the Simplest Explanation

Before anything else, look at the trolley. That’s the small carriage that rides along the rail overhead and pulls the door open by way of the curved arm bolted to the top panel.

Every opener has an emergency release, the red cord hanging from that trolley. Pulling it disconnects the door from the opener so you can operate the door by hand during a power outage. Once it’s pulled, the motor will run the trolley up and down the rail all day long without touching the door.

This is by far the most common version of the problem, and it accounts for a lot of the calls I get. Somebody pulled the cord during a storm outage last winter and forgot. A kid hung on it. A tall load in the truck bed caught it on the way out. It gets bumped more often than people would guess.

Here’s how to tell: press the button and watch the rail. If you see the trolley traveling along it while the door sits still, the door is simply disconnected. If the trolley doesn’t move at all, the failure is inside the motor head and you can skip ahead.

Reconnecting is usually straightforward. On most openers you pull the release cord toward the door, which resets the mechanism, then run the opener until the trolley carriage catches and locks back in. Some models want you to pull the cord back toward the motor instead. Either way it should re-engage with an audible click.

One caution. Only reconnect a door that is fully closed and that you can lift by hand with reasonable effort. If the door is heavy to lift or won’t stay put on its own halfway up, the counterbalance system has a problem and reconnecting the opener puts that whole load onto the motor. That’s a different repair, and forcing it is how a modest spring job turns into a spring job plus an opener.

When the Trolley Doesn’t Move Either

If the motor runs and nothing on the rail moves, the drive connection has failed inside the unit. What broke depends on what kind of opener you have.

Chain and belt drive openers have a sprocket at the motor head that the chain or belt wraps around. Behind that sprocket, inside the housing, sits the main drive gear. On the overwhelming majority of residential openers that gear is nylon, riding against a steel worm gear on the motor shaft.

That nylon gear is the part that fails, and it fails by design. It’s the sacrificial component, chosen to be softer than everything around it so that when the system takes more load than it should, a fifteen dollar gear gives up instead of the motor. When it strips, the motor spins freely and transmits nothing.

The signature is unmistakable once you know it. The motor sounds different, usually higher and smoother, because it’s no longer under load. And there will be shavings. Fine white or gray nylon dust collects on top of the door, on the floor beneath the motor head, or on whatever is stored under the opener. If you see that dust, you have your answer before anyone opens the housing.

Screw drive openers are less common in Troy but they’re out there, especially in homes from the eighties and nineties. These use a threaded steel rod instead of a chain. The failure point is typically the coupler that joins the motor shaft to the screw. When it cracks or strips out, the motor turns and the rod doesn’t.

Direct drive and newer DC units move the motor onto the trolley itself. These fail differently and less predictably, and they usually need a diagnostic rather than a guess.

There’s also a mechanical failure that isn’t the gear at all. The sprocket assembly at the motor head rides on a bearing, and when that bearing seizes or the set screw holding the sprocket backs out, the chain stops being driven even though the gear is intact. Worth knowing, because it’s cheaper to fix and it gets misdiagnosed as a gear regularly.

The Question Nobody Asks

Here’s the part that separates a repair that lasts from one you’ll be calling about again.

When I replace a stripped gear, the first thing I want to know is why it stripped.

Nylon gears do wear out on their own. An opener that has cycled several times a day for fifteen or twenty years has earned its failure. That’s normal, and in Troy, where a lot of the housing stock is exactly that age, it’s what I find often enough.

But a gear that strips at eight years old is telling me something. That gear failed because it was carrying more load than it was built for, and an opener is not built to carry much. Your springs counterbalance the weight of the door. The opener’s job is to overcome friction and guide a door that is already nearly weightless in your hands. It is a positioning device, not a lifting device.

When springs weaken, and they always do gradually rather than all at once, the door gets heavier. The opener starts compensating. Every cycle puts strain on that nylon gear that the designers never intended. The homeowner doesn’t notice, because the door still works. Then one morning the gear gives out and the opener gets blamed for a spring problem.

The same thing happens with rollers that have seized and are dragging in the track, with a track section that’s out of alignment, with hinges pulling loose, and with everything at once in January when the cold stiffens old grease and contracts the metal.

So when someone tells me their opener just stripped a gear and the unit is only a few years old, I test the door balance before I quote the gear. I disconnect the opener and move the door by hand. A properly balanced door will stay roughly where I leave it, and it should feel like maybe ten pounds in my hands. If it drops, or if it takes real effort to lift, the springs are the actual problem and the gear was a casualty.

Replacing that gear without correcting the balance means you’ll strip the new one too.

Repair the Opener or Replace It

Gear kits are inexpensive and the labor is reasonable, so repair is usually the sensible call. I lean toward repair-first on openers the same way I do on doors.

Replacement starts making more sense in a few specific situations. If the unit predates 1993 it doesn’t have photo eye sensors, and no gear kit fixes that. If parts for the model are no longer available, which happens with discontinued lines, repair stops being an option regardless of what you’d prefer. If the logic board has been failing intermittently, or the unit has already had multiple repairs, you’re spending money in installments. And if the opener is loud enough to be a nuisance and your garage is attached to a bedroom, which describes a lot of Troy homes, replacing an aging chain drive with a belt drive solves a problem that has nothing to do with the gear.

What I try not to do is use a failed gear as an excuse to sell a new opener on a unit that has plenty of life left. A twelve year old chain drive with a fresh gear and a properly balanced door will keep working for years.

What You Can Safely Check

This is a problem where a homeowner can narrow things down considerably without touching anything under tension.

Watch the rail while someone presses the button and note whether the trolley moves. Look for nylon dust on top of the door and on the floor under the motor head. Check whether the chain or belt has gone slack or come off the sprocket. Look at the release cord and see whether it’s hanging in the disengaged position. Listen to whether the motor sounds like it’s straining or spinning free.

With the opener disconnected, lift the door by hand and pay attention to what it feels like. Heavy, or won’t stay where you put it, points at the springs.

Then stop. The gear lives inside the motor head, which means opening a housing on a unit mounted overhead with the drive components and electrical inside it. And nothing about a stripped gear should lead you toward the springs, cables, drums, or bottom brackets. Those hold enough stored energy to cause serious injury and they are not homeowner territory under any circumstances.

The other thing worth stopping is the button. Once you know the motor is running without moving anything, continuing to cycle it accomplishes nothing and can shred what’s left of the gear into the rest of the assembly.

What Ignoring It Costs

An opener with a stripped gear isn’t dangerous by itself. The door isn’t going anywhere, and you can operate it manually in the meantime.

The cost is in the diagnosis you’re not getting. If the gear failed because the counterbalance is weak, that condition is still there and still getting worse. Weak springs don’t recover. They break. And a spring that breaks while the door is up is a different kind of morning than an opener that quit.

Meanwhile a door being operated manually every day, with springs that aren’t carrying it properly, is putting uneven load through cables, rollers, and track that were fine last month.

When to Call

Call if the trolley isn’t moving, since that puts the failure inside the housing. Call if you find nylon dust, which confirms the gear before anyone takes anything apart. Call if the door feels heavy by hand or won’t hold position, because that’s the more urgent problem regardless of the opener. Call if reconnecting the trolley didn’t take, or if it re-engages and then slips again. And call if the opener is out of warranty and old enough that you’d rather have somebody tell you honestly whether it’s worth repairing.

When I come out for this, I check the drive components and I check the door, in that order but never one without the other. Diagnosing an opener without testing the balance of the door it’s attached to is guessing.

Closing Thought

An opener that runs without moving the door is one of the least alarming garage door failures and one of the most commonly misread. The motor is usually fine. The gear is usually cheap. The question worth answering is what asked that gear to do more than it was built for.
