A Door That Won’t Close Is a Different Problem Than a Door That Won’t Open

Most of what I write about involves doors that refuse to open. Broken springs, snapped cables, doors hanging off track. Those calls come in early in the morning, usually from someone whose car is trapped in the garage.

The call I want to talk about today comes in at night.

The homeowner is trying to close up the house. They press the button, the door starts down, and then it stops and rolls right back up. Sometimes it makes it halfway. Sometimes it barely moves before reversing. Sometimes the opener light starts blinking and nothing happens at all. Now there’s an open garage facing the street and no obvious way to shut it.

After more than 13 years repairing garage doors throughout Troy, Michigan, I can tell you this problem worries homeowners far more than it should, because the most common cause is also the least expensive one to fix. A door that won’t close is usually not telling you that something broke. It’s usually telling you that your safety system is doing exactly what it was built to do.

The trick is understanding what it’s reacting to.

Your Door Is Supposed to Refuse

Every garage door opener manufactured for residential use since 1993 has to include a reversing system. That requirement came out of a long history of children and pets being injured by closing doors, and it’s the single best safety improvement the industry has ever made.

The system has two independent parts, and knowing which one is unhappy tells you most of what you need to know.

The first part is the pair of photo eyes mounted near the bottom of each track, usually about six inches off the floor. They send an invisible beam across the opening. If anything interrupts that beam while the door is closing, the opener stops and reverses immediately.

The second part is force detection. The opener monitors how much effort it takes to move the door. If the door meets more resistance than expected on the way down, the opener assumes it has hit something and reverses.

When a garage door won’t close, one of those two systems has decided something is wrong. Occasionally it’s right and there’s a real obstruction. Far more often, something has gone out of adjustment and the opener is reacting to a problem that doesn’t exist.

The Photo Eyes Are the First Place to Look

If your door reverses immediately, or won’t start down at all while the opener light blinks steadily, the sensors are the likely culprit. Here’s what I usually find when I get there.

Alignment drift. The two eyes have to point directly at each other. The brackets holding them are thin sheet metal and they bend easily. A bike handlebar, a trash can, a snow shovel leaning in the corner, a kid’s scooter clipping one on the way past. It doesn’t take much. The eye moves a quarter inch, the beam misses its target, and the opener stops trusting the opening.

Dirt on the lens. In a Michigan garage the lenses collect road salt film, brake dust, and grit all winter long. Come fall, spider webs are the bigger issue. The eye doesn’t need to be fully blocked to fail, just clouded enough to weaken the beam.

Sun glare. This one catches people every year in Troy, and it’s seasonal. As the sun angle drops in late fall and winter, low direct light can hit the receiving eye through an open door and overwhelm it. Homeowners find this maddening because the door works fine all morning and fails at four in the afternoon. If your problem has a time of day attached to it, that’s your answer.

Loose or damaged wiring. The sensor wires are usually stapled up the track and along the ceiling. Staples driven too tight will pinch through the insulation over time. Wires also get snagged during garage cleanouts or chewed by mice, which is more common in attached garages than most people expect.

Almost every opener gives you a readout for this. Both sensors have small indicator lights. On most brands, a steady light on each one means the pair is aligned and communicating, and a blinking or dark light means it isn’t. Which sensor is misbehaving tells you which one to look at.

When the Sensors Check Out Fine

If both indicator lights are steady and the lenses are clean, the problem is somewhere else, and now the diagnosis gets more interesting.

Close travel limit set wrong. The opener has to be told how far to travel before the door is fully shut. If that setting has drifted, the opener drives the door into the floor and keeps pushing. It reads the floor as an obstruction and reverses. The signature of this one is a door that closes all the way, touches down, and then immediately opens back up. That’s not a sensor problem. The beam isn’t even in play at that point.

Down force set too low. Force sensitivity can drift out of adjustment, or it can have been set too tight when the opener was installed. The door then reverses partway down for no visible reason.

But here’s where I want to slow down, because this is the point where a lot of homeowners make an expensive mistake.

Down force can also be correct and the door genuinely is harder to move than it should be. That’s a mechanical problem, and turning up the force to compensate is one of the worst things you can do to a garage door. You’re telling a motor to push harder against something that’s binding. I have replaced a lot of stripped opener gears and bent top sections that started as somebody turning a screw to make an annoyance go away.

Things that make a door bind on the way down include a roller that has seized and is dragging instead of rolling, a bent or dented track section, a hinge pulling loose from a panel, and debris in the bottom track. In Michigan, add a garage floor that has heaved slightly from frost, which changes where the door meets the slab. And in cold weather, everything tightens up. Old grease stiffens, metal contracts, weatherstripping gets rigid. A door that’s marginal in July becomes a door that reverses in January.

Sorting Sensor From Mechanical

There’s a straightforward way to tell these apart, and it’s worth knowing.

Most openers let you bypass the photo eyes by holding the wall button down continuously. Constant pressure overrides the beam, which exists so you can close a door in an emergency. If the door closes normally under constant pressure and only fails on a single button press, your problem is in the sensor circuit. If it still struggles, binds, or reverses under constant pressure, the issue is mechanical or force related.

Two conditions on that. Never do it without a clear line of sight to the entire opening, and never with children or pets anywhere near the door, because you have deliberately switched off the system that protects them. And never treat it as a fix. It is a diagnostic step and a way to secure your house for one night. Homeowners who get in the habit of closing a door this way are running an unprotected garage door indefinitely, and eventually something is under it.

What You Can Safely Check Yourself

This is a rare garage door problem where a homeowner can do quite a bit without going anywhere near a high tension component. Nothing on this list involves springs, cables, or the bottom brackets.

Look at both sensor lights and note which one is off or blinking. Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth. Check whether anything is sitting in the beam path, including a broom, a garbage bin, or a stack of boxes just inside the door line. Look down the length of both sensor wires for pinch points or breaks. Sight along the bottom track for a stone, a chunk of ice, or a hardened lump of salt. Watch the door go down under constant pressure and listen for where it starts to struggle.

If a sensor is clearly knocked out of alignment, gently squaring the bracket by hand is reasonable homeowner territory.

What I’d ask you not to do is adjust the force or limit settings on the opener. Those adjustments look simple, and they are, but they’re only safe once you know the door itself moves freely. Setting the force higher to overpower a binding door hides the real problem while accelerating the damage. It also disables the protection you paid for.

What Happens If You Leave It

An open garage is a security problem, and in a Troy winter it’s also a heating problem for any room over or next to the garage. Those are the obvious ones.

The mechanical version is what concerns me more. A door that binds on the way down is a door where something is already wearing wrong. Rollers that drag chew through their stems and the track they run in. A loose hinge tears at the panel it’s mounted to, and panel damage is one of the few garage door problems where replacement genuinely becomes the better value. Springs and cables under uneven load wear unevenly.

The reversal is a symptom. Treating it as the whole problem is how a fifteen minute service call becomes a section replacement.

When to Bring in a Technician

Call if the sensor lights look correct and the door still won’t close. Call if the door reverses at the same spot every time, which usually means something physical is waiting for it there. Call if the door only misbehaves in cold weather, because that pattern almost always points at binding rather than electronics. Call if you can see a bent track, a roller out of position, or a hinge pulling away from a panel. And call if the door has started making noise it wasn’t making before, since a new sound plus a new reversal is rarely a coincidence.

When I get to a door that won’t close, I test the balance first. I disconnect the opener and move the door by hand to see whether the counterbalance system is actually carrying its weight, because a door the springs aren’t supporting properly will fight the opener the entire way down and no amount of sensor work will fix it. Then I check roller and track condition, hinge and section integrity, sensor alignment and wiring, and finally the opener’s travel limits and force settings. In that order, because adjusting the opener before verifying the door is the mistake I get called to undo.

Closing Thought

A garage door that refuses to close is one of the few times the system tells you something is wrong before anything is actually broken. The reversing feature is not malfunctioning. It’s reporting.
